PRES PICTURE INFORMATION

2nd GRADE PARENTS/GUARDIANS

In March of 2010 the Indiana General Assembly passed House Enrolled Act 1367 (also known as Public Law 109) requiring the evaluation of reading skills for all third grade students. This legislation was developed to ensure students can read at grade level prior to fourth grade. As many researchers and educators have noted, from Kindergarten through grade three, students are primarily “learning to read.” But beginning in fourth grade, students must be able to “read to learn.” Standards and materials only get more complex from fourth grade forward, and students who cannot read proficiently will struggle to keep up with their peers.

In response to this legislation, at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) announced that all grade two and grade three students currently enrolled in an accredited Indiana school, including English learners (ELs) and students with disabilities, must participate in the Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination (IREAD), unless a case conference decision states otherwise. We are encouraging all students to try their best on the assessment as their results will help us ensure students are on track to become proficient readers.

If a student passes the IREAD assessment in the second grade they will not be required to take the assessment again as a third grade student. Should a student not pass the assessment in the second grade parents/guardians will be notified about specific next steps for their student.

The IREAD Spring 2025 testing window designated by the IDOE for our second graders will be March 3rd- March 14th. Specific testing dates will be shared with parents/guardians based on their students’ classroom teacher.
